Conditional mood
Modo condicional

The conditional mood expresses probability, possibility, wonder and conjecture. It is used to talk about hypothetical situations and to make polite requests. English does not have a conditional mood and relies instead on modal verbs (could, might, should and would).

Hypothetical actions

  • ¿Trabajaríais durante mi ausencia? = Would you (all) work during my absence?
  • Él viajaría pero no tiene el tiempo. = He would travel but he doesn't have the time.
  • Yo compraría ese auto. = I would buy that car.

Reported speech

  • Él dijo que terminaría el trabajo. = He said that he would finish the work.

Then-clause dependent on if-clause

The if-clause is in the imperfect tense of the subjunctive mood.

  • Si fuéramos ricos, viajaríamos a la luna. = If we were rich, we would travel to the moon.

Polite expression of desire

  • Querría ir a la playa esta semana. = I would want to go to the beach this week.
  • Les gustaría hacer eso. = They would like to do that.

Polite expression of request

  • ¿Podrían abrir la ventana? = Could you (all) open the window.

Speculation about past events

  • Aquél día caminarías mucho. = That day you must have walked a lot.

Future action from past perspective

  • De niño, pensaba que me gustaría ser payaso. = As a child, I thought that I would like to be a clown.
  • Yo sabía que cerrarían la tienda a las nueve. = I knew they would close the store at night.

Advice/Recommendations/Suggestions

  • ¿Qué haría usted en esta situación? = What would you (formal) do in this situation?
  • Deberían ir a la fiesta. = They should go to the party.
  • Yo que tú, lo olvidaría completamente. = If I were you, I would forget him completely.

Compound conditional
Condicional compuesto

The compound conditional tense combines the conditional mood and the past participle verb form. It is then followed by if and the pluperfect tense of the subjunctive mood.

Hypothetical past actions

  • Ella habría comido si le hubieran dado el tiempo. = She would have eaten if they had given her the time.
